THE WAY OF THE SWORD
THE TSUNAMI WAY
TRADITIONAL & MODERN

Traditional and modern learn the art of the samurai.
At Tsunami we teach traditional Iaido and modern sword techniques which incorporate many different styles which allows each person to get out what they want to learn and not what they are told to learn.
IAIDO - IAI-JITSU
Iaido stems from IAI-JITSU, which is the classic method of Japanese swordsmanship. The ideal is to perfect the initial movement of the sword to strike instantly, preferably in a single action. Iaido is the Japanese Martial Art that developed from training in Iai-Jutsu sword combat. It is the modern art of drawing the samurai sword from its scabbard, based on 12 kata`s. Each technique consists of 4 main actions. NEKITSUKE; - drawing the sword from its scabbard; KIRITSUKE; -cutting with the sword; CHIBURI; - shaking blood from the blade and NOTO; -sheathing the sword. For obvious reasons the IAIDO dojo is amongst the strictest of arts, students need to have a responsible attitude from the moment they enter the dojo, until they leave. Respect for the sword, the teachers and the etiquette of the art is a must. A great deal of kneeling down and drawing the sword from a kneeling position takes place, knees and ankles soon get used to the movements as does the shoulders which will build up with the constant cutting action, some cuts are executed with one hand, others require two, thus making this art not just for the purpose of swordsmanship, but also the development of body and control of mind making Iaido an all round discipline At one time in history at the KINDAI RYU school in Japan students were obliged to sign an oath with their own blood. Such a demand helped ensure the style was preserved for over 500 yrs.In the 21st century we cannot hope to capture the spirit of feudal Japan, but in the dojo at least we should learn to respect and remember it, we don’t ask for blood just commitment.
